Ombudsman asks for parents' views on international school fees

Updated: Sep 17, 2019

Hong Lok Yuen has its own international primary school as one of the facilities located within the estate. Residents and parents have been given the opportunity to provide their views on international school fees - deadline 26th July.

On 26 June the Office of the Ombudsman announced that it is carrying out a direct investigation into how fees collected by international schools are regulated by the Education Bureau and invited parents and parents' associations to provide information and their views for the Ombudsman to consider by 26th July 2018.

Please take this opportunity to provide the Ombudsman with your views and information to further the interests of all international school parents and their children. The submissions can be as brief or as lengthy as you wish, and can be submitted to the Ombudsman by email, fax or post at the following details:

The Office of the Ombudsman

Address: 30/F, China Merchants Tower, Shun Tak Centre 168-200 Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong Fax: 2882 8149 Email: complaints@ombudsman.hk

As stated by the Ombudsman “Parents have been relying on the Education Bureau (EDB) to scrutinise the schools’ budgets and their justifications for fee increase. The bureau should ensure that the levels of fee increase are reasonable and protect the interests of students and their parents. If schools are at liberty to unreasonably hike their school fees year after year, that would bring about a heavy financial burden for parents to bear. We are, therefore, very concerned about whether the EDB has in place a sufficiently strict mechanism and proper procedures for approving applications for school fee revision.”

This is a perfect opportunity to confidentially provide your views, as international school parents, to benefit your children's and all international school students' educational outcomes.

However please remember that the deadline to provide your views to the Ombudsman is just over 2 weeks away on Thursday 26th July 2018.
