HISTORY OF HONG LOK YUEN

Originally an orange orchard owned by a Kuomintang General, Hong Lok Yuen was developed in the early 1980s by a Canadian property developer who had the vision to introduce the concept of a Western suburban garden neighborhood in the New Territories - the first of its kind in Hong Kong.

This is why the Hong Lok Yuen estate logo is an orange tree, with the five oranges representing the General's five daughters.

To support the development of a luxury residential estate in what was then a remote location, club premises were included in the communal land area of the estate, and a commercial town centre providing services were part of the original development.

As a condition of government approval for the Hong Lok Yuen development, the school premises were required to be included in the plans, to support the education needs of the increased family population.

The original first phase of development of Hong Lok Yuen in the 1980s was of the area bounded by Hong Lok Yuen East and West Roads and First to Third Streets, and included the commercial town centre, club and school premises.

With the success of the Hong Lok Yuen residential concept confirmed, further phases of development occurred during the 1990s, which included a change of ownership of the undeveloped land and communal facilities from the original developer to Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd in 1991. Towards the end of the 1990s Hong Lok Yuen had become the garden estate that you know now.
